India’s young all-rounder Washington Sundar has been consistently performing during the ongoing England tour, impressing fans and experts alike with both bat and ball. His recent century in Manchester under high pressure showcased his temperament and skill, making him the talk of the cricketing world. However, Sundar is now in the spotlight for another reason — his father’s sharp criticism of the national selectors.Sundar, Washington’s father, has publicly expressed disappointment over his son’s inconsistent selection despite proven performances. He questioned why Washington was benched for the first Test of the England tour and highlighted the lack of continued opportunities. “My son deserves 5–10 consistent chances in the playing XI, especially at number 5,” he said.

Washington made a remarkable Test debut in 2021 during the Border-Gavaskar series in Australia, scoring 62 runs and taking 4 wickets. He followed it with unbeaten scores of 85 and 96 against England, but was dropped soon after. Between 2021 and 2024, he played only 12 Tests, often sidelined in favor of seniors like Ravichandran Ashwin.
After returning in the 2024 New Zealand series, Washington has stayed in the squad but not regularly in the XI. His father’s comments have reignited the debate on fair selection and long-term planning for young talents.
