Taking a leaf out of the BJP’s playbook, the Rajasthan Congress is working to revamp its organisational structure to ensure better connection with workers as well as improve internal communication, a pilot project in Rajasthan that it hopes to emulate across all states.
“Earlier, we were dependent on the local MLA or leader to put together a team of party workers. As many district presidents and workers were not active participants in party meetings, it became imperative to make necessary amends in the organisational structure of the party, keeping the long-term benefits in mind,” party spokesperson Swarnim Chaturvedi told The Indian Express.
Pointing out that the Congress’s robust organisational structure, which was in place two decades ago, is now defunct, sources said party workers would be divided into five levels as part of the exercise.
In what is seen as the first step towards revamp, the party has increased its district units from 40 to 50, presidents for which are appointed after All India Congress Committee (AICC) members survey the district concerned and collect feedback before picking a candidate for the post.
According to a party leader, each committee at every level will have a president and members, whose contact details will be available at the respective headquarters. “This will help leaders directly convey messages to ground-level workers, thus making it easier to mobilise them,” the leader added.
Sources said the decision was taken as the party found it difficult to gather crowds due to miscommunication between leaders and workers.
With the BJP’s strong organisation touted to be one of the key factors for its electoral successes in the state, the Congress too has decided to organise its workers at six levels: booth, mandal, block, nagar, district and state.
The Congress’s central leadership has seemingly approved the restructuring. “During Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s Jaipur visit in April, Govind Dotasra (state Congress chief) showed him a file bearing the names and contact details of workers at various levels. Kharge initially refused to believe it and said some of the details might be fake. Dotasra urged Kharge to dial any number and check, which he did. Later, leaders in Delhi also re-verified the details. They seem satisfied with the work we have put in,” a party leader said on the condition of anonymity.
