Police in Karnataka’s Udupi district arrested six people on Monday for alleged cattle slaughter.
The arrested persons are Ram (49), Prasad (21), Sandesh (35), Rajesh (28), Naveen (35) and Keshav Naik (50). One person is absconding.
The animal parts were found by the roadside late on Saturday near Kunjalu Junction area in Brahmavar taluk. Police stepped up security in the area — the district is considered communally sensitive — following the discovery and protests over it.
Superintendent of Police Hariam Shankar warned against spreading misinformation. “There are several communal speculations that are being circulated on social media and I request the public to refrain from such posts. Strict action will be taken against those who incite communal tensions,” he said.
Police said one of the accused persons, Naik, handed a cow to the other accused citing his inability to care for it. The others allegedly slaughtered it for consumption.
During transportation, however, some parts allegedly fell onto the road. The Superintendent of Police said four special teams tracked down the accused.
