Weekend fun turned tragic after five youngsters died due to drowning in two separate incidents in Karnataka on Sunday.
In the first incident, Gautam, 19, Lokesh, 19, and Ashish, 18, all from Bengaluru, were swept away when they ventured into the sea along the Gopadi beach near Kundapur in Udupi district.
According to the police, a group of 10 students had come to Gopadi beach on Saturday. A police officer said, “On Saturday, the patrol police saw the students venturing into the sea. They warned them from entering the sea and were sent back. But on Sunday morning, they came again. The locals also warned them to stay away. Around 1.40 pm, nine of them entered the sea.”
Thereafter, four students were pulled in by powerful waves. By the time help arrived, three had drowned, and only one could be saved, the police added.

The deceased have been identified as Siddharth, 20, and Nishanth, 21. According to the police, the incident took place on Sunday evening when a group of six friends had gone to a resort and visited the lake. Around 4.30 pm, the six were taking selfies along the edge of the lake when Siddharth and Nishanth slipped and drowned.
Other friends tried to save them but were unsuccessful. Fire and emergency personnel rushed to the spot, recovered the bodies, and sent them for postmortem.
