Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s comments on Hindu deities snowballed into a major political storm Wednesday, with the BJP accusing him of demeaning Hindu goods, and belittling devotees.
The party’s Yuva and Mahila Morcha workers attempted to lay a siege to the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters, Gandhi Bhavan, in Hyderabad on Wednesday. Prevented by the police, they burnt the effigy of the chief minister, all the while demanding he immediately apologise to the Hindu community.
Condemning the police action and detention of women activists during the protest, Telangana BJP Mahila Morcha chief Dr Mekala Shilpa Reddy called the CM “Revanthuddin, not Revanth Reddy”.
“The Congress, which hates Hindus, is submissive to the AIMIM. And the CM is now spewing venom on Hindus.”
In Delhi, BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said Revanth’s remarks depict a pattern of Congress leaders “insulting” Hindu deities, “which cannot be tolerated”.
“This is the same CM who during the Jubilee Hills bypolls openly announced that the Congress means Muslim, Muslim means Congress. We have no objection at all, go with the community. But don’t dare insult our Hindu gods and goddesses,” Trivedi said, while accusing the Congress of joining hands with Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM.
Revanth made his contentious remark Tuesday while addressing the newly appointed district Congress presidents and other leaders at Gandhi Bhavan. Referring to the disagreement among leaders over some of the appointments, he said there is no unanimity even among Hindus as they do not pray to one God.
“The Congress party includes people, leaders of varied opinions, mindsets, that’s why it has survived this long. There are three crore gods and goddesses in Hinduism, right, for what? For people maintaining celibacy, there is Hanuman, for one going for two marriages there is another god. For those consuming alcohol there is one. Then there are Yellamma, Pochamma, Maisamma … Toddy is poured, chicken is offered to some deities. Even for people consuming just vegetarian, lentil food, there is a god,” Revanth said, as several Congress leaders around him broke into laughter.
Another Day Another Insult to Hindu’s by Congress
Congress mocks, abuses, insults Hindus day in and day out and when election results come, they blame EVMs.

Advising the newly appointed district chiefs, he said, “There is no agreement among us over one God. One bows to Venkateshwara Swamy, one to Anjaneya, some take Ayyappa Deeksha, some Shiva-mala. So, I don’t think there will be a consensus on political leaders, DCC presidents. But then there should be a favourable opinion in the public about us.”

‘Congress too like Hindu society’
BJP leaders were quick to mount an attack on Revanth. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay said the CM’s remarks were clear evidence that the “Congress’ hatred for Hindus flows through its veins”.
Bandi said the apprehensions he expressed during the Jubilee Hills byelection—“if the Congress or the BRS were to win even by mistake, Hindus would face a situation where they could not step outside with their heads held high”—have come true.
“With the CM’s remarks, the plight has become clear. The party’s (Congress’) hatred towards Hindus and Hindu deities now stands exposed,” the Karimnagar Lok Sabha MP said in a statement.
“The Hindu community must seriously reflect on this. Will you remain divided and keep swallowing insults and humiliation? Or will you unite and demonstrate the strength of Hindus?”
Both Telangana BJP head Ramchander Rao and Andhra Pradesh unit head P.V.N. Madhav condemned Revanth’s remarks and demanded his apology to the Hindu community.
Accusing the CM of becoming arrogant on power, Rao said Revanth “is continuing his anti-Hindu statements and the Congress party’s appeasement policy to attract Muslim votes in the local body elections in the state”.
The local body polls in the state are scheduled next week.
CM Revanth, who is in Delhi to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers and the top Congress leaders for the Telangana Rising Summit next week, defended his comments, saying he “only meant to convey the message that Congress too is like the Hindu society”.
“The BJP, which lost its deposit in Jubilee Hills bypolls, is making it a controversy,” the CM told the media, adding only edited portions of his speech made at his party’s internal meet were being circulated. “But thanks for making me popular in north India too.”
