Heavy rain lashed parts of Bengaluru on Monday evening, resulting in waterlogging in a few parts of the city. The showers will likely continue in Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert till Thursday.
In the spell that lasted for nearly an hour, Vidyapeeta received 34.5 mm of rainfall, while Kengeri received 33 mm and Rajarajeshwarinagar 32 mm. Parts of Bengaluru received between 10 and 30 mm of rainfall, according to data from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).
The IMD on Monday forecast isolated heavy rain in coastal Karnataka till Sunday, while parts of South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, are expected to receive heavy rain on Wednesday.
KSNDMC data also shows that rainfall has so far been slightly higher than normal during the southwest monsoon season in Karnataka.
Compared to an average rainfall of 696 mm between June 1 and September, the state received 730 mm of rainfall—an excess of five per cent—this year. Rainfall has been higher in north interior Karnataka, as the region received 19 per cent more rain—406 mm against a normal of 341 mm.
In coastal and Malnad districts, which receive the highest rainfall in the state, the deviation was 3 per cent and 6 per cent, respectively. While the average rainfall for coastal districts for the said period is 2,811 mm, 2,906 mm was recorded this year. Malnad districts received 1,302 mm of rainfall against an average of 1,385 mm.
Seven districts, six of them in North Karnataka, received excess rainfall (20 per cent or more than normal). While rainfall was normal in 23 districts, Chamarajanagar in southern Karnataka received deficit rainfall.
