Three nursing students of the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) who were on a picnic drowned in the backwaters of the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) dam in Meenakshipura in Karnataka’s Mandya district on Sunday.
The police identified the deceased as Prashanth, 22, Krishna, 21, and Siddesh, 22. Prashanth was from Periyapatna taluk in Mysuru district, Krishna from Haveri district, and Siddesh from Chamarajanagar district.
The incident took place around 1.30 pm, when all three students entered the water unaware of its depth, which had increased following rain in Kodagu and the Cauvery basin. And the students did not know how to swim, according to a police officer.
The students’ bodies were recovered with the help of Fire and Emergency Services personnel and local expert swimmers, according to personnel from the Yelawala police station in Mysuru, where a case has been registered.
In another incident, a 35-year-old man died while taking a photo near Talasi Abbi Falls in Shivamogga district on Sunday.
The police identified the man as Ramesh, a resident of Nagarabhavi in Bengaluru who worked in a private firm as manager. He was visiting the falls with four of his friends.
A police officer said the incident took place while Ramesh was posing for a photo and video, which one of his friends was capturing. He fell owing to the force of water and drowned instantly. The entire act was recorded on a mobile phone, and the video went viral online.
The Hosanagara police in Shivamogga have registered a case.
