As the probe into the tragic death of the 24-year-old Tripura youth is on, the Uttarakhand Police have stated that they have found no prima facie evidence of racial violence in the case. Speaking to the media about the incident, Ajay Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun, said that a heated altercation took place between the accused and the deceased Anjel and his younger brother Michael on the day of the incident. Violence ensued, in which the victim, Anjel Chakma, was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The senior cop said that the violence escalated due to some words being wrongly interpreted. The accused were arguing and were exchanging some derogatory remarks. Somehow, a wrong impression was created that their derogatory remarks were targeted at the victim and his brother, which led to the violence.

“It doesn’t fall into the category of a racist comment because a young man involved in the incident is also a resident of the same state,” SSP Ajay Singh said. “Some derogatory remarks were being exchanged among themselves by a group of people sitting together, and somehow the impression was created that the comments were being directed at them. It was in this confusion that the clash occurred, and this entire incident resulted from that clash,” he added.
Dismissing the allegations of racism, SSP Ajay Singh said that one of the accused was himself from the Northeast. “They didn’t know each other beforehand, they had no such intention, nor had there ever been any fight or argument between them. The fight broke out between strangers, and one of the boys from the northeast himself admitted during interrogation that the comments were not directed at anyone else; they were simply making those remarks among themselves in jest,” he clarified.
Anjel Chakma died during treatment
Anjel Chakma, an MBA student from Tripura, passed away during treatment at a private hospital on 26th December. He was injured during an alleged racial violence in Dehradun on 9th December. The incident reportedly happened near a canteen where Anjel Chakma and his younger brother, Michael Chakma, had gone to buy groceries.
Michael Chakma alleged that as he was returning with his brother on a bike, a group of intoxicated men standing near the canteen hurled racial slurs at them, calling them“Chinese and chinky.” Michael got off the bike and objected to the racial remarks. An altercation ensued between him and the group, and they started attacking him. Seeing this, his brother Anjel Chakma came to his defence, but the group of men attacked him too. They hit Michael on the head with a kada (metal bangle) and stabbed Anjel with a knife, leaving him with grievous injuries. Anjel Chakma was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition, where he received medical treatment for around 17 days before passing away on 27th December.
Six individuals, including two juveniles, were identified by the police as the accused. Five of them were caught on 14th December, but the sixth one fled to Nepal. Police are on a lookout to nab the sixth accused, and a non-bailable warrant has been issued against him.
