In Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district, a migrant worker from Maharashtra’s Kolhapur was brutally assaulted with machetes by four minors, who were reportedly intoxicated. The victim, mentioned as Suraj, was severely injured in an attack video-recorded by the assailants themselves. The video of the incident has drawn sharp criticism on social media as well as from political leaders.
Tamil Nadu BJP leader K Annamalai wrote on X on 29th December, “Suraj, a migrant worker from Maharashtra working in Thiruthani, was subjected to a barbaric assault by a gang intoxicated on ganja. His only crime was daring to object when a knife was placed on his neck so that others could record a social media reel.”
“This is the disturbing reality of DMK-ruled Tamil Nadu today. While the police have arrested the perpetrators, the larger rot remains untouched. Easy access to narcotics, open glorification of violence, political propaganda against migrant workers and the casual carrying of deadly weapons like swords have become normalised under this regime. The DMK government must be held accountable for turning a once orderly state into a Jungle Raj,” he added.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram urged the Tamil Nadu Police to do thorough identity checks of history sheeters to make the public “feel safe”.
“I reiterate my earlier demand. The time has come for the TN Police to prove its mettle. A statewide “Show of Force” operation is needed immediately. Massive checking of all vehicles plying the roads & identity checks must be done. All history sheeters must be required to report to the nearest police station thrice a week. Public must be made to feel safe,” Chidambaram wrote on X.

AIADMK national spokesperson, Kovai Sathyan also condemned the brutal assault on the migrant worker and said, “Very distrubing video. Viewers discretion advised. Strictly not for kids. #DMK Dravidian model achievement. When drugs get into the hands of Juvenile, this is what happens. Tamilnadu is the new Amsterdam and narcotic state of India. These boys should not be treated as Juvenile, they should be treated as Adults. @mkstalin history shall say you are the most incompetent CM TN has never seen. God save TN.”
In the video, the attackers are seen flashing a victory sign after brutalising the migrant worker. The injured victim, Suraj (reported as Siraj in some portals), was targeted by the accused persons while on a train. The accused persons threatened him with machetes and sickles. In no time, the matter escalated from threats to a violent attack.
The accused took the victim Suraj to a secluded place near the railway station, where they repeatedly attacked him with sickles. The whole incident was filmed by the attackers and later uploaded as an Instagram reel.
Currently, the victim’s condition is critical, and he is undergoing treatment at a hospital. Meanwhile, the police have taken cognisance of the video and said that an investigation into the matter has been initiated.
