Karnataka records a sharp rise in electric vehicle purchases, supported by fuel savings, home charging convenience and benefits under the Gruha Jyothi scheme.
Karnataka is witnessing a significant rise in electric vehicle adoption, supported by escalating petrol-diesel prices, easy home charging options and the growing number of households benefiting from the Gruha Jyothi scheme. These combined factors have made EVs a more attractive choice for daily commuters across the state.
In 2025, Karnataka has already recorded 1,69,704 electric vehicle registrations, of which 1,41,283 are two-wheelers. The state now sees 514 new EV registrations every day, placing it just behind Maharashtra, which leads nationally with 1,95,969 EV sales.

Residents say the biggest motivation is cost savings. With fuel prices consistently rising, EV owners benefit from drastically lower daily running expenses. Many households are able to conveniently charge their vehicles at home, and those who fall within the Gruha Jyothi consumption limits find their monthly electricity costs easier to manage, making EV ownership even more economical.
The growth is also driven by the Centre’s push for cleaner mobility and the availability of charging stations for commercial vehicles. Delivery fleets, commuting services and small businesses are increasingly shifting to EVs due to lower operational costs and better charging access.
Karnataka’s EV registration numbers over the years show a steep upward trajectory:
• 2020 -9,686 EVs
• 2021 – 33,289 EVs
• 2022 – 95,741 EVs
• 2023 – 1,52,313 EVs
• 2024 – 1,77,646 EVs
• 2025 – 1,69,704 EVs so far
While the majority of new registrations are two-wheelers, a substantial number of commercial vehicles also contribute to the rising figures.
As the state continues to upgrade charging infrastructure and more households manage EV charging within their monthly consumption patterns under Gruha Jyothi, officials expect the upward trend in EV purchases to continue in the coming year.
