Pollution Control Board inspection finds alarming contamination levels in Karnataka rivers, with only Netravati rated safe for bathing and household use.
The Karnataka Pollution Control Board (PCB) has released a startling report showing that water from 12 major rivers across the state is unsafe for drinking. Samples collected from 32 points along these rivers in September revealed significant contamination, low dissolved oxygen, and the presence of coliform bacteria.

Among the rivers tested, only the Netravati was rated B, making it suitable for bathing and domestic use. Eight rivers, including Lakshmanatirtha, Tungabhadra, Kaveri, Kabini, Krishna, and Shishila, were rated C, while three rivers, Bheema, Kaginah, and Arkavathi, received a D grade, indicating severe pollution.
The report highlights a serious environmental concern for Karnataka, where rivers are a primary source of water for millions. According to PCB officials, none of the rivers received an ‘A’ grade suitable for direct drinking. The study cites chemical contamination, oxygen depletion, and bacterial presence as major factors contributing to unsafe water quality.

Authorities urge residents to avoid consuming untreated river water and to follow proper water purification measures. Experts warn that the findings underscore the need for urgent conservation and pollution control initiatives to restore Karnataka’s rivers.
