The Karnataka government will distribute title deeds to 1.10 lakh families in February 2026 as part of its Revenue Village Formation campaign. The decision will benefit tribal settlements such as Thanda, Hatti and Gollarahattis.
The move is based on the amendments made to the Karnataka Land Reforms Act, 2017, which granted ownership rights to agricultural labourers and marginalised communities by allowing residents to register themselves as owners of houses built on land that did not belong to them. Such residences were mostly built on government land.
Under the ongoing campaign, the Revenue Department identified undocumented residential areas and houses, conducted surveys and prepared records for the residents. The process of granting title deeds involved issuing notifications, registering the property of residents, and creating permanent accounts in the local bodies, among others.
Following a review meeting of the Revenue Department held earlier this week, the government decided to issue 1.1 lakh new title deeds for residents without one in the state. During the meeting, Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda directed all deputy commissioners to expedite the process to ensure the completion of the campaign.
Since the 2017 amendment to the law, 1.08 lakh families received title deeds by May 2023, according to the Revenue Department. Between May 2023 and 2025, another 1.11 lakh families were covered. With the upcoming distribution, the total number of beneficiaries will cross 4 lakh households, according to the department.
Spot inspections of residences that will get title deeds were also carried out ahead of issuing title deeds to verify the claims of the applicants.
