Karnataka seeks UDAN funding extension to 7–10 yrs to sustain airports; only 33 of 71 routes operational, Kalaburagi shut after support ended
The Karnataka government has urged the Union civil aviation ministry to extend the financial support period under the Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme from the current three years to seven or ten years. Industry Minister M. B. Patil informed the Legislative Council that the request was made to prevent regional airports from shutting down due to lack of viability once the funding tenure ends.
Patil explained that he had written to the Centre asking for either fresh bids from eligible airlines or an extension of the scheme to ensure continuity of operations. His remarks came in response to concerns raised over the closure of Kalaburagi airport after Star Air discontinued its only flight connecting the city to Bengaluru.
The minister noted that the three‑year incentive period often proves insufficient for airports to achieve sustainable passenger traffic. Once viability gap funding (VGF) stops, airlines withdraw services, leaving airports non‑functional. He added that discussions had been held with the Union civil aviation minister, and the state chief secretary had also communicated the request formally.

The debate in the Council saw objections from Minister Shivanand Patil regarding operations at Bidar airport, while Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre urged that such concerns be addressed directly with the government.
According to the civil aviation ministry, 14 airports across India developed under UDAN are currently non‑operational due to reasons ranging from the expiry of concession periods to poor visibility, daytime runway restrictions, aircraft shortages, leasing issues, and low passenger loads.
In Karnataka, UDAN investments have supported airports at Belagavi, Bidar, Hubballi, Kalaburagi, Mysuru, and Vidyanagar, with no funds allocated to Shivamogga. Of the 71 routes awarded in the state, only 33 remain operational. Kalaburagi airport, closed after its VGF tenure, is eligible for re‑bidding under the scheme.
