Mr. Kharge described the nomination as an “ideological battle,” praising Justice Reddy as “one of India’s most progressive jurists” who consistently upheld the rights of the poor and defended the Constitution. Interestingly, the Aam Aadmi Party, which is not formally part of the INDIA bloc, has also extended its support to his candidature.

Justice Reddy, who served on the Supreme Court bench from 2007 to 2011, delivered landmark judgments across criminal jurisprudence, constitutional law, taxation, service matters, and human rights. He also briefly served as Goa’s first Lokayukta and earlier as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.
Born in a village in Andhra Pradesh, Justice Reddy studied law at Osmania University before beginning his judicial career at the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1993. His elevation to the Supreme Court in 2007 marked the high point of a distinguished legal career.
The INDIA bloc’s announcement comes just days after the ruling NDA declared Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan as its candidate.
The Vice-President election is scheduled for September 9, with nominations closing on August 21.
