The Government of Karnataka recently issued an order capping movie ticket prices at ₹200 for all shows and languages across multiplexes and single-screen theatres, with an exemption for multiplexes with 75 seats or fewer. This move aimed to regulate soaring ticket prices, especially for non-Kannada films, where prices had previously exceeded ₹1,000.
The Multiplex Association of India and Hombale Films challenged the order, calling it illegal. Following a hearing, the Karnataka High Court, led by Justice Ravi Hosmani, granted an interim stay on the price cap for multiplexes.
The film industry had long called for price regulation, with director S.V. Rajendra Singh Babu earlier submitting a request during his tenure as President of the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy. While the government finally acted, the implementation remains on hold due to the court’s stay.
