Launched on August 15, the Rs 3,000 FASTag annual pass for private vehicles has already been adopted by over five lakh users, promising smoother, quicker, and more economical highway travel.
India’s highways are witnessing a major shift in toll payments with the newly launched FASTag Annual Pass crossing the five lakh user mark in just four days, according to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Rolled out nationwide on August 15, the annual pass allows private vehicle owners to make a one-time payment of Rs 3,000 for one year of validity or 200 toll plaza crossings, whichever comes first. Valid across nearly 1,150 toll booths, the pass can be activated within two hours through the Rajmargyatra mobile app or the NHAI website.
The response has been swift. On the very first day, 1.2 lakh users purchased and activated the pass, while toll booths recorded 1.24 lakh transactions. Officials say this reflects a strong demand from commuters eager for a more convenient, cashless way to travel long distances.

The government has pitched the initiative as a way to enhance “ease of living”, cut down delays at toll plazas, and provide highway users with a more affordable, seamless experience. Importantly, the scheme is available only for non-commercial vehicles that already use FASTag.
FASTag itself, powered by radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, has seen tremendous adoption in India, with a penetration rate of 98% and 8 crore users nationwide. By further reducing recharge hassles, the annual pass is expected to make highway travel faster, smoother, and more efficient, NHAI noted.
