A group of engineering students was allegedly kidnapped and robbed of Rs 1.5 lakh while returning after an early-morning trip to a famous food joint in Hoskote, on the outskirts of Bengaluru, on December 21.
According to the police, four students of a college in Bagalur were returning on two-wheelers after eating biryani at the joint in Hoskote when a gang of 10-12 men intercepted them near a toll plaza. The gang allegedly beat them up and took away their mobile phones and two-wheelers. When the students followed the assailants, they took them hostage, demanding money. The gang members allegedly took away Rs 40,000 that the students had with them and also transferred Rs 1.10 lakh from their bank accounts through PhonePe.
“The students were taken to a shed near Medahalli, where they were robbed of money and mobile phones,” said K Parashurama, DCP, Whitefield.
The students got their two-wheelers back later, according to the police.
Seemant Kumar Singh, Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru, said on Tuesday that the students had not filed any complaint till the police got to know about the incident and approached them.
The Avalahalli police on Monday registered a case on the charges of kidnapping and dacoity based on a complaint filed by one of the students and constituted a team to nab the gang.
An officer said the police arrested one of the accused, named Arfath Ahmed, 24, a resident of KG Halli. They have launched an investigation to arrest the others, the officer added.
