On Yellow Line inauguration day, DCM D K Shivakumar urges PM Modi for massive funding to address Bengaluru’s traffic, water, and waste challenges through mega projects.
During the high-profile launch of Namma Metro’s Yellow Line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D K Shivakumar made a bold pitch for unprecedented Central funding to transform the city’s infrastructure.
In a formal letter to the Prime Minister, Shivakumar sought Rs1.5 lakh crore for a host of large-scale projects aimed at tackling the city’s worsening congestion, dwindling water supply, and mounting waste management problems. He emphasised that as India’s technology hub and the nation’s second-largest tax contributor, Bengaluru requires urgent investment to sustain its growth and global standing.

The proposal features five semi-high-speed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors, inspired by Delhi-Meerut’s “Namo Bharat,” alongside the expansion of Namma Metro by 128 km in Phases 3 and 3A. Other big-ticket plans include two urban tunnels and elevated corridors worth Rs 41,780 crore, a long-pending Peripheral Ring Road at Rs 27,000 crore, and 40 km of double-decker roads on key routes.
Additional measures include integrated waste plants, arterial road upgrades, stormwater drain road construction, and the sixth stage of the Cauvery Water Supply Scheme. Shivakumar urged the Union government to extend Delhi-level support, arguing such aid is essential for Bengaluru’s liveability and economic competitiveness.
