A cyclonic storm will develop in the Bay of Bengal around November 26, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

The cyclone’s probable track or highest likely intensity are yet not available. However, the Met office has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall (105 – 204mm in 24 hours) to lash the Andaman and Nicobar islands and continue till Tuesday.

If intensified the cyclonic storm will be identified as Senyar, a name proposed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will be the second cyclone to develop in the Bay of Bengal during this year’s post monsoon season. Cyclone Montha had crossed coastal Andhra Pradesh near Kakinada on October 28 as a ‘severe’ cyclone.

Sea and other atmospheric conditions are most favourable for cyclogenesis in the North Indian Ocean, comprising the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, during May and November.
According to the IMD, Saturday’s low pressure intensified into a well-marked low pressure system and prevailed over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining Strait of Malacca.

” This system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea on November 24. It will continue to move further west-northwestwards and is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over southeast Bay of Bengal during subsequent 48 hours,” said IMD in its special weather bulletin issued on Sunday morning.
As the system is approaching, moderate intensity rainfall will prevail along the islands till Sunday. Thereafter, the Nicobar islands will experience an increase in the rainfall activity with the IMD warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (105 to 204mm in 24 hours) on November 24 and 25.
Fishermen have been warned against venturing into Andaman Sea and southwest Bay of Bengal till November 25 and along the southeast Bay of Bengal till November 28. Squally weather with winds with speeds reaching 35 to 45 km / hr gusting to 55 km / hr is likely to prevail till Sunday. With the system intensifying, winds speeds would gradually increase and likely to reach up to 65 km / hr on November 25.
