A speeding ambulance crashed into motorcycles that were waiting at a traffic signal in central Bengaluru
on Saturday night, killing a couple and injuring two others, the police said.
The incident took place around 11.15 pm on Double Road in Shanthinagar when the ambulance was heading from a direction where the traffic signal lights were red, the Wilson Garden traffic police said. The ambulance, carrying the sticker of Cloud Nine Hospital, rammed into several two-wheelers before colliding with a police outpost.
Ismail, 40, and his wife Sameen Banu, 33, who were on a Honda Dio scooter, died in the incident, the police said, adding that two others—Riyan and Siddiq—were injured and admitted to a hospital. The couple were residents of Someshwara Nagar in Bengaluru.
Video footage captured the aftermath, showing bystanders attempting to lift the ambulance off the police outpost, with mangled motorcycles scattered across the scene.
The Wilson Garden traffic police have launched a probe. The police said their investigation revealed that the ambulance was blaring its siren, even though there was no patient inside the vehicle. The driver of the ambulance fled from the spot soon after the incident.
The police said on Sunday that they had detained the ambulance driver.
Ambulance drivers have also been booked in the past for blaring sirens while the vehicles carried no patients.
