Bengaluru residents are calling for the reinstatement of the Chikkaballapur–Bengaluru Cantonment MEMU train service, which was withdrawn by South Western Railway (SWR) in January 2025. The cancellation has triggered concern among daily commuters, particularly those from northern Bengaluru and surrounding towns, who argue that the service played a crucial role in reducing road congestion.

The train, which operated via Baiyappanahalli, was considered an important link for passengers connecting to the Namma Metro network. Regular users believe its absence has increased dependency on road transport, worsening traffic bottlenecks along Hebbal and the Outer Ring Road. They stress that resuming the service would provide better access to Whitefield and other key employment hubs, while easing pressure on overburdened city roads.
Bengaluru Central MP P.C. Mohan urges railway authorities
The demand gained further visibility this week when Bengaluru Central MP P.C. Mohan urged railway authorities to bring back the service. Many residents have echoed the appeal online, voicing frustration over the city’s limited suburban rail options despite rapid urban growth.
However, SWR officials maintain that the service was discontinued due to extremely low occupancy. According to the railway division, average patronage had dropped below two percent, making operations unsustainable. Officials also clarified that no proposal for resumption has been received so far.
With civic groups highlighting the importance of suburban rail connectivity and commuters continuing to push for restoration, the debate over the MEMU service reflects the broader challenge of balancing demand and viability in Bengaluru’s expanding transport network.
