The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has instructed the state government to reassess the cost estimates for the Namma Metro Red Line project, connecting Hebbal and Sarjapur. Despite receiving cabinet approval in December 2024, the ministry has requested a fresh evaluation before approving its 50 percent equity share.

According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the 36.59-kilometre corridor with 28 stations was initially estimated at Rs 28,405 crore, which translates to approximately Rs 776.3 crore per kilometre. However, the ministry has returned the DPR, emphasizing the need for an updated cost analysis. Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has confirmed that external consultants are currently conducting the re-assessment.
Land acquisition costs are estimated at Rs 8,080 crore
The project, which features both elevated and underground stretches, includes 22.14 km of viaducts and 14.45 km of tunnels. Land acquisition costs are estimated at Rs 8,080 crore, with Rs 1,224 crore allocated for the purchase of private land. A total of 161.65 acres have been identified for the project, including 55.69 acres near Sarjapur Circle for a proposed depot.
The alignment of the Red Line is expected to impact approximately 836 properties, including 314 residential buildings, 37 commercial establishments, and 63 industrial structures. Once the preliminary notification is issued, more details on land acquisition and potential displacement will be provided. The 28 stations will cover several key areas of Bengaluru, connecting major locations such as Sarjapur, Bellandur, and KR Circle.
