India’s homegrown telecom revolution, BSNL’s indigenously developed 4G network to be upgraded to 5G nationwide within eight months, marking a major milestone in India’s digital self-reliance journey.
In a major boost to India’s digital self-reliance, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that BSNL’s indigenously developed 4G network will be upgraded to 5G within six to eight months. The minister made the announcement at the Kautilya Economic Enclave 2025, underscoring India’s emergence as a global technology leader.

Scindia highlighted that India has now joined the exclusive club of countries with indigenous 4G technology, previously dominated by Huawei, ZTE, Samsung, Nokia, and Ericsson. “Today, India has entered the club with its own 4G standard. But we are not going to rest. Within the next six to eight months, we will switch these 4G towers to 5G networks and provide end-to-end 5G capability across the length and breadth of India,” he said.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched BSNL’s Swadeshi 4G network, connecting 92,564 towers from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Bharuch to Arunachal Pradesh, symbolizing India’s indigenous innovation.

Addressing global economic concerns, Scindia emphasized that India is becoming a “fulcrum for the Global South”, with 7.8% GDP growth in Q1 FY25-26 despite global turbulence. “India is not just another destination, India is the direction. India is the mission,” he asserted.
On the sidelines, Scindia revealed that India is also pioneering the communication-AI-semiconductor ecosystem, boasting the second-largest mobile manufacturing base globally. These advances will be showcased at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025, which will host delegates from 150 countries, 7,000 participants, and 1,500 exhibitors, highlighting cutting-edge use cases in 4G, 5G, AI, and quantum computing.
