A 40-year-old software engineer in Bengaluru shot his estranged wife dead with a pistol while she was returning home after work on Tuesday evening, the police said.
The deceased woman has been identified as Bhuvaneshwari, 39, an assistant manager at Union Bank of India’s Basaveshwaranagar branch. She was married to Balamurugan, who worked at Capgemini, an IT services company. The couple were married in 2011 and have two children.
According to the police, Balamurugan opened fire at his wife around 6.30 pm and walked to the Magadi Road police station with the pistol, confessed to the crime, and surrendered himself.
Girish S, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West, said, “The couple were married for 14 years but separated one and a half years ago due to a misunderstanding. Balamurugan had suspected that his wife was having an affair. While the wife was demanding legal separation, Balamurugan was not ready for it.”
Six months ago, Bhuvaneshwari was transferred from the bank’s Whitefield branch to the Basaveshwaranagar branch, and Balamurugan was unaware of it. He tried to trace her and their children but was unable to do so, the police said.
Four months ago, Balamurugan found out that Bhuvaneshwari had moved to Cholarapalya in KP Agrahara. And he was enraged when he got a divorce notice from her a week ago. On Tuesday, he waited with a pistol and allegedly shot her while she was returning home.
Bhuvaneshwari was brought dead to Shanbhag Hospital in Basaveshwaranagar, according to the police.
The police, who have registered a murder case, have detained Balamurugan.
An officer said the police would produce him before a magistrate and seek his custody for further investigation.
