Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has clarified that there will be no immediate change in the existing ward structure, despite the state government’s notification of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and the creation of five new municipal corporations.
At present, BBMP administers 198 wards. With the government announcing the official implementation of Greater Bengaluru from September 2, speculation had been rife regarding the introduction of new wards under the proposed corporations. However, the Commissioner confirmed that ward delimitation is not part of the current exercise.

“The government has notified the formation of five municipal corporations. But the existing wards will remain as they are until further orders. People should not believe any rumours regarding changes in ward numbers or boundaries,” Rao stated.
He explained that BBMP is presently focused on assessing manpower requirements and administrative expenditure needed for the operation of the new corporations. Only after these preparations are completed will further structural changes be considered.
Ward Delimitation Commission after new corporations begin
According to the Greater Bengaluru Authority Act, the government will constitute a Ward Delimitation Commission once the new corporations begin functioning. This body will be responsible for finalizing the number of wards, their boundaries, and related administrative details.
Officials stressed that any information circulating about ward changes at this stage is unfounded. The transition to the new Greater Bengaluru framework will proceed in phases, beginning September 2.
