One of the most attention-grabbing features of director James Gunn’s excellent new “Superman” film, which has become a massive hit despite changes in the box office for superhero movies, is how it leans into its comic book origins — specifically, the density of detail and care put into the designs and the world-building. One especially memorable flight of imaginative fancy is the character of Mr. Handsome, the humanoid creature who steers the cargo ship in Lex Luthor’s (Nicholas Hoult) pocket universe. Although Mr. Handsome doesn’t have any lines and doesn’t factor into the plot except as…
Apple TV+ RATING : 6 / 10 Pros Intriguing depiction of Hawaiian traditions and customs Solid performances Gorgeous scenery Cons Lackluster direction Cliched drama Not enough action and suspense As far as historical TV dramas go, we can confidently say that FX’s “Shōgun” set the bar extremely high last year. It showed that it’s possible to deliver a monumental epic on the small screen, too. But if you fell in love with that miniseries as much as I have, you realize it also created a drawback…
Scott Yamano/Netflix “Happy Gilmore 2,” the much-hyped three-decades-later sequel to the 1996 Adam Sandler sports comedy hit, has been making waves since its July 25 arrival on Netflix, with fans and critics alike (and even Taylor Swift) deeming it an affable, charming, and highly entertaining improvement on the original. Much like the first “Happy Gilmore,” with its litany of cameos from illustrious sports and comedy figures, “Happy Gilmore 2” boasts a deep bench of stars in supporting and minor roles. One of those is Marshall Mathers, aka Eminem, who turns in a…
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Colombia’s government reported on Thursday a sharp overall rise in deforestation in the country’s Amazon rainforest for last year, reversing much of the progress made during a historic low in 2023.The national meteorological agency said pasture expansion for cattle, illicit crops, illegal mining, and unregulated infrastructure development were to blame. The data was released just a month after Colombia’s environment ministry had noted a drop in the destructive practice in the first quarter of this year, citing stronger community coordination and a crackdown on environmental crime. The overall figures for last year show that the country lost 113,608…
President Donald Trump escalated his campaign to pressure pharmaceutical companies to lower drug prices, sending letters to 17 of the world’s largest drugmakers demanding they charge the U.S. what other countries pay for new medicines. In the letters, sent to Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer and others, Trump insisted companies immediately lower what they charge Medicaid for existing drugs. He also asked them to guarantee that future medicines be launched and remain at prices on par with what they cost overseas.Trump gave the companies 60 days to voluntarily comply, threatening to “deploy every tool in our arsenal to protect American families…
Fox Following his long-running role on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel,” where he played a vampire private investigator, actor David Boreanaz got a fresh start in 2005 as another type of investigator on the long-running police procedural “Bones.” There, he played FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth alongside Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan. Together, they served as one of television’s best police duos (and romantic couples) for an impressive 12 seasons. Like many shows of its kind, from “Law & Order” to “NCIS” and beyond, “Bones” featured regular guest…
International outcry over images of emaciated children and increasing reports of hunger-related deaths have pressured Israel to let more aid into the Gaza Strip. This week, Israel paused fighting in parts of Gaza and airdropped food. But aid groups and Palestinians say the changes have only been incremental and are not enough to reverse what food experts say is a “ worst-case scenario of famine” unfolding in the war-ravaged territory. The new measures have brought an uptick in the number of aid trucks entering Gaza. But almost none of it reaches U.N. warehouses for distribution.Instead, nearly all the trucks are stripped of…
MOKOPANE, South Africa (AP) — A South African university launched an anti-poaching campaign Thursday to inject the horns of rhinos with radioactive isotopes that it says are harmless for the animals but can be detected by customs agents. Under the collaborative project involving the University of the Witwatersrand, nuclear energy officials and conservationists, five rhinos were injected in what the university hopes will be the start of a mass injection of the declining rhino population. They’re calling it the Rhisotope Project.Last year, about 20 rhinos at a sanctuary were injected with isotopes in trials that paved the way for Thursday’s launch.…
Congress Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh, who triggered controversy in 2010 after attending the launch of a book, ‘26/11: RSS ki Sazish’, was also measured in his words, saying that terrorism, a “byproduct of hatred”, had no religion.“I even told the home minister in the Rajya Sabha that I never accused the RSS of the Mumbai attack. I will repeat that the RSS had no role in the Mumbai terror attack. The allegations made against me are false,” Singh had told reporters ahead of the Malegaon case verdict.Following the verdict, when reporters approached him for a response, Singh said, “There…
Later, speaking to reporters, Fadnavis demanded that the Congress apologise for trying to defame the entire Hindu community. “The Congress-led UPA government tried to set a narrative of saffron terror to appease the minorities during elections. Today’s judgement shows how false that narrative was. The way the UPA and Congress conspired to show saffron terror, was wrong. The Congress should apologise to the entire Hindu community for trying to paint them as terrorists,” he said. Similarly, BJP’s Mohan Yadav, the CM of Madhya Pradesh, from where Pragya Singh Thakur hails, in a post on X also said that a “Hindu cannot be…
