Complex are the ways of coalition politics in India. It is hardly surprising then that Bihar should today present such a curious scenario marked with contradictions, even as all-out attempts are being mounted to clinch the upcoming Assembly polls in the key state, which has set new trends in the country’s politics over the decades. While Nitish Kumar-led NDA has been at the helm, anchored by the BJP, the Opposition Mahagathbandhan or INDIA alliance, including the RJD and Congress, seems out to dislodge the NDA government. Also tantalising is the role that the political strategist-turned-politician and Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) founder…

Now one municipality may demand payment to bring dogs into town.A bill in Bolzano, Italy, would mean that dogs bringing their owners to the Tyrolean Alps for some scenery and mountain air would face a new charge of roughly 1.50 euros ($1.75) per day, the Italian news media reported.Local dogs won’t escape under the bill, which would come into force in 2026 if it is approved by the provincial council. Residents would be charged an estimated 100 euros per dog,…
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva used his speech at the United Nations General-Assembly to criticize the unilateral moves by his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump. He will leave with a pledge to discuss tariffs with the American leader — and a political win against his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro, who used to gloat about his access to the White House.Lula and Trump have been at odds since July, when the U.S. leader imposed a 50% tariff on many Brazilian exports citing alleged persecution against Bolsonaro, who was recently sentenced to 27 years in prison. But a…

Stephane Cardinale – Corbis/Getty Images If you have a favorite director, you can expect that your favorite director probably has a favorite director too. Enter Quentin Tarantino, who didn’t come right out and say that his fellow Oscar winner Christopher Nolan is his favorite director, per se, but he had some serious praise for the British director’s 2017 film “Dunkirk.” The movie, which centers around the evacuation of Allied forces in World War II, utilizes little dialogue and relies on atmosphere and action as the soldiers depicted travel by plane, land,…
Tristar Media/Getty Images Liam Neeson just scored a modestly-sized hit with “The Naked Gun” reboot over the summer, and it looks like audiences are starting to discover another of his much more serious action epics. “Ice Road: Vengeance” went direct to streaming in 2025, and it’s climbed Netflix’s top 10 for September 24, topping out in fourth place, which is very impressive for a film with no buzz. “Ice Road: Vengeance” takes the mostly-not-staged “Ice Road Truckers” and throws in a little bit of “Taken.” A sequel to “The Ice Road,” it…
Washington: Health authorities in the United States are raising alarms over a sharp increase in infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria, often referred to as “nightmare bacteria”. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that infections by these dangerous bacteria rose by almost 70 percent between 2019 and 2023. Researchers attribute the surge to bacteria carrying the New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM) gene. Once considered exotic and mostly found in a few patients outside the United States, these bacteria are now appearing with increasing frequency across the country. The presence of the NDM gene can render…
