Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil, who recently complained to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah that only 7.6 per cent of illegal mining cases were investigated, will head a subcommittee formed to look into cases of illegal mining that took place between 2007 and 2011. The subcommittee was formed on Wednesday at a special meeting of Karnataka’s cabinet held at Nandi Hills, Chikkaballapur district. The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday allowed an investigation by the CBI into certain aspects of the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribe Development Corporation scam, directing the agency to be provided with certain documents and other materials. The petition for a CBI investigation was filed by BJP leaders Basangouda Yatnal, Ramesh Jarikholi, Arvind Limbavalli, and Kumar Bangarappa. The BJP has since expelled Yatnal. The Electronics City police said on Wednesday that they arrested a 30-year-old Infosys employee who allegedly secretly recorded videos of his female colleagues in the office washroom. Swapnil Nagesh from Sangli, Maharashtra, who worked as a technical analyst at the company’s Electronics City campus in southeastern Bengaluru, has been charged under section 77 (voyeurism) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and section 66E (violation of privacy) of the Information Technology Act. Over a month after renaming Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South district, Karnataka’s cabinet on Wednesday cleared a proposal to rename Bengaluru Rural district as Bengaluru North district. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the decision while addressing a news conference following a special cabinet meeting at Nandi Hills in Chikkaballapura district. The Bengaluru police have arrested five men from Rajasthan for allegedly robbing a jewellery shop in the city and fleeing with gold ornaments worth Rs 50 lakh. Investigators have so far recovered 478 grams of the 600 grams of gold that was stolen. Announcing the arrests on Tuesday, Seemanth Kumar Singh, Police Commissioner, Bengaluru, identified them as Narayan Lal, 43, Keeraram, 35, Pushpendra Singh, 35, Mahendra Gehlot, 27, and Dilip Kumar, 36.
