Protests linked to the eviction drive in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district turned ugly on Monday (22nd December) when a mob set fire to the ancestral home of BJP leader Tuliram Ronghang and pelted it with stones.
Ronghang is the chief executive member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. The house is in the Dongkamukam area of the West Karbi district of Assam.
According to media reports, at least three people got hurt in the clash, and cops tried to break up the angry crowd. To handle things, the authorities sent in extra CRPF teams and police commandos right away. They also put strict prohibitory orders in place to stop more trouble.

Section 163 imposed in the district
Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) is now active in West Karbi Anglong to keep peace and order. Karbi Anglong district magistrate Nirola Phangchopi issued the order on Monday, 22nd December, and it stays on until they say otherwise. The goal is to stop troublemakers from stirring up fights between communities and to keep people and property safe.
No group of five or more people can gather. From 5 pm to 6 am, nobody can move around, and private vehicles are banned. Rallies, protests with torches, sit-ins, or dharnas are not allowed in public spots. You can’t carry guns or burst firecrackers either.
Who gets exemptions
Police, military personnel, and officials on duty are exempt from following movement rules. People with medical emergencies can go out too. Schools, colleges, and universities running exams will stay open as usual. Government and private offices will work normally.
Akhilesh Kumar Singh, the IGP for Law and Order, told ANI that they’re bringing in more forces to calm everything down. He said the mob burned down the house of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council chief. A few security staff had minor injuries, and they’re still gathering details.
Things heated up on Monday (22nd December) morning after police picked up some protesters. Locals blocked roads and marched to Dongkamukam of the West Karbi Anglong district, where they torched Ronghang’s ancestral home. Meanwhile, another mob vandalised several homes, a school bus, and other properties in a nearby basti area.
