The Karnataka government recently issued an order reassigning IAS and IPS officers serving the erstwhile Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and five city corporations under it.
This order will apply to 16 IAS and two IPS officers serving under various capacities at BBMP. The BBMP had a chief commissioner, seven special commissioners, eight zonal commissioners, an additional director general of police, and a superintendent of police.
As per the order issued August 29, the GBA will be headed by a chief commissioner and will have four special commissioners tasked to head various departments under the umbrella agency monitoring the city corporations under it.
Each of the city corporations will be headed by a commissioner and will have an additional commissioner in its ranks. All these posts will be handled by IAS officers, according to the order. The two IPS officers deputed to the Bengaluru Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF) of BBMP will now be deputed to the GBA.
The GBA Act was passed by the Karnataka legislature in March this year, despite protests from the Opposition BJP. On August 26, the government issued a notification forming the GBA, which will come into force from September 2. The GBA will have 75 members with the chief minister as its chairman and the deputy chief minister as vice-chairman.
