Karnataka seeks Centre’s nod for Bengaluru Metro Phase‑2 cost hike, Phase‑3A expansion, RRTS project, and leachate treatment to fast‑track urban growth
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development in‑charge DK Shivakumar has urged the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry to expedite approvals for several major urban projects in the city. Meeting Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi, Shivakumar presented a memorandum highlighting the state’s priorities.
One of the key proposals was the revised cost estimate for Phase‑2 of the Bengaluru Metro. The project’s completion cost has escalated from about ₹26,405 crore to nearly ₹40,425 crore. The Karnataka government has already cleared the revised estimate and forwarded it to the Centre in June 2025, seeking early approval to avoid delays.

Shivakumar also pressed for clearance of Phase‑3A of the Metro, a 36.59 km corridor from Sarjapura to Hebbal with 28 stations. The plan includes 22.14 km of elevated tracks and 14.45 km underground, with an estimated cost of ₹28,405 crore. The Detailed Project Report has already been submitted to the Union ministry.
Beyond metro expansion, the Deputy CM sought support for a Regional Rapid Transit System to strengthen Bengaluru’s regional connectivity. He also requested approval for a project addressing legacy leachate treatment and disposal at Mittaganahalli pond, aimed at improving environmental management in the city.
