The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) launched a sixth train service on its Yellow Line between Electronic City and R V Road on Tuesday morning, increasing the frequency of trains on the route from 15 minutes to 13.
“With this additional train, Metro services on the Yellow Line will operate at 13-minute frequency during peak hours from Monday to Saturday, as against the existing 15-minute interval. On Sundays, the peak-hour frequency will continue to be 15 minutes,” the BMRCL said in a statement on Monday. The sixth train began service at 6 am on Tuesday.
The Yellow Line service in south Bengaluru, connecting the Electronic City in the southeast part of Bengaluru – a route traversed by thousands of workers in the IT sector – was opened on August 10 with three trainsets.
“There will be no change in the first and last train timings from either terminal, i.e., RV Road and Bommasandra,” the BMRCL said.
Last month, officials had indicated that the sixth train would be dispatched from the Titagarh coach manufacturing firm on November 17.
The Yellow Line has been operating five trainsets since November 1, when the headway on the line was reduced from 19 minutes to 15 minutes. “Service is expected to improve further as more trainsets are introduced in the coming months,” BMRCL said last month.
“Currently, BMRCL is using 100% of the Yellow Line trains during peak hours to support passenger convenience, even though it means temporarily operating without a spare train,” it had stated.
