An outsourced security guard at the Chabad House in Bengaluru has been accused of stealing the bag of an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officer.
The accused has been identified as Dorai Raj, 55. The cash belonged to Ora Ben-Hur, a woman IDF officer, who was part of an official delegation visiting India.
The manager of the Chabad House in Shivajinagar complained that when the delegation visited the Jewish community centre on December 15, the security guards were supposed to bring the luggage of the visitors up to their rooms. However, of the two bags she brought, Ben-Hur received only one. Later, when they checked the CCTV footage, they found Raj walking away with the other bag.
Thereafter, the manager reported the incident to the Commercial Street police. Raj was arrested the same day and later released on station bail. The police have recovered the missing bag along with Rs 2,000 from Raj’s possession.
A case has been registered under Section 303 (2) (theft) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“The offence is non-cognizable and bailable. Dorai Raj has been released on station bail but will have to appear for questioning whenever summoned. Neither the IDF officer nor the Israeli consulate has complained about other valuables or documents missing from the bag. We have questioned Dorai Raj, and he confessed that he carried the bag assuming it would contain more money,” a police officer said.
