On 5th December, Abdul alias Saif sliced a Hindu woman with a blade, hitting her in the neck in Ganeshganj area of Mirzapur district in Uttar Pradesh. The girl was rushed to hospital. She was later referred to Varanasi for treatment. After the incident, Abdul managed to flee, however, the police arrested nine of his family members, in addition to some neighbours and friends. The incident sparked outrage among local Hindu rights organisations, which staged protest and demand stern action against the accused Muslim youth.
Reports citing preliminary investigations say that the Hindu victim and the Muslim accused had known each other for about a year. They were initially friends; however, things took a bitter turn as the Hindu girl resisted Abdul’s pressure to convert to Islam and perform Nikah with him. Due to the constant pressure to change her religion, the Hindu girl ended her relationship with Abdul.
The police were conducting door-to-door searches to find the Abdul in Rambagh, Qureshi Nagar, and several surrounding neighbourhoods and announced a reward of Rs 25,000.
An FIR was registered against Abdul alias Saif under sections 333 (House-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), 109(1) (murder attempt) of BNS, besides sections of the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, at the Katra Kotwali.
