The film ‘Veshagalu’, based on journalist Ravi Belagere’s short story of the same name, began shooting with a muhurtha ceremony held at the large drama-stage set erected in the JK Grand Arena premises near Kengeri on Mysuru Road. DYSP Rajesh gave the first clap for the muhurtha shot, which featured a scene from the play Shakuntala – Dushyanta Maharaja as the opening sequence.
Under Green Tree Studios, Kishan Rao Dalavi has written the screenplay and is directing the film. The dialogues are written by Saujanya, who is a teacher by profession. Along with showcasing theatre artistes, the film also depicts the lifestyle of Jogathis. Srinagara Kitty appears in dual looks as Basappa and Basamma Jogathi.
Following the muhurtha, a press meet was held with actor–producer Srinagara Kitty, lead actor Bharath Bopanna, lead actress Ankita Amar, senior actor Sharath Lohitashwa, Tabala Naani, music director Kaushik Harsha, lyricist Kaviraj, and cinematographer Manohar Joshi, who all spoke about the film.

Director Kishan Rao said he initially acted in a few plays and worked as an assistant director. After reading the story “Veshagalu,” he felt it would translate well into a film. He received approval from Bhavana Belagere. He said the story is largely set within theatrical spaces and follows a romance that unfolds against a theatre backdrop. Art director Maluru Vijay has designed the drama sets, and DOP Manohar Joshi’s involvement added new energy. Lyrics for the film are written by Kaviraj, Nagendra Prasad, Kalyan, and V. Manohar. Around 40 to 50 segments of theatre episodes appear in the film. The story travels from Ballari to North Karnataka, Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, he said.
Srinagara Kitty said that although the story is short, his wife supported his decision to act when Kishan proposed making it into a film. He explained that the film presents the internal workings of theatre groups and nomadic drama troupes. Set in the theatre space of the year 2000, the film also carries a parallel love story. He plays Basappa and Basamma, portraying two shades in his role.
Senior actor Sharath Lohitashwa said he plays a powerful role named Simhanna and has witnessed director Kishan’s long struggle. He also mentioned his long association with Kitty. Tabala Naani said he is playing a role in the film and performs as a harmonium player in the theatre troupe.
Lead actress Ankita Amar said the film reflects the unseen “roles” people adopt in real life. She plays the character Alamelu, depicting her aspirations and dreams. Lead actor Bharath Bopanna said he plays Chinnalla, an innocent young man.
Music director Kaushik Harsha said the theatre-based storyline includes 12 songs. The film features choreography by Madan Harini, editing by Akshay P. Rao, and costume design by Aishwarya.
