A respected IAS officer known for his integrity, simplicity, and public service lost his life along with two brothers in a devastating road accident near Kalaburagi.
A tragic road accident in Kalaburagi district has claimed the life of senior IAS officer Mahantesh Bilagi, leaving Karnataka in deep mourning. The accident, which also killed his brothers Shankar Bilagi and Eeranna Bilagi, has shocked officials, colleagues, and residents across the state.
According to initial information, Bilagi was travelling from Ramdurga towards Kalaburagi to attend a family wedding. The vehicle, an Innova Crysta, was moving via the Vijayapura route when it reached near Gounahalli village. To avoid hitting an oncoming motorcycle, the driver reportedly swerved, causing the car to crash off a bridge and overturn multiple times. The severe impact left all three brothers critically injured. Bilagi died on the way to the hospital, while his brothers also succumbed to their injuries. The driver and another occupant are said to be in critical condition.
The district administration in Kalaburagi immediately took note of the incident, and senior officials visited the hospital to gather details. The accident has deeply affected Bilagi’s hometown of Ramdurga in Belagavi district, where a pall of silence has spread. Friends, relatives, and well-wishers gathered outside the family residence, recalling his humility and the strong bond he shared with people around him.
Born on 27 March 1974, Bilagi came from a family that struggled financially. Despite hardships, he pursued education with determination, working part-time during his student days. His perseverance led him to clear the KAS examination with the 4th rank, after which he served as an Executive Officer. In 2012, he was selected into the IAS (Karnataka cadre), marking a milestone in a life shaped by discipline and ambition.
Throughout his career, Bilagi held key positions, including Managing Director of BESCOM, Deputy Commissioner of Davangere, and other important roles across Karnataka.
His tenure as Davangere DC earned him widespread appreciation, especially during the COVID-19 period, when he coordinated critical services and handled oxygen shortages with prompt action. Known for his people-centric approach, he also supported civil service aspirants by providing guidance and coaching.
As Managing Director of the Karnataka State Minerals Corporation at the time of his death, Bilagi was regarded as a committed and upright officer who remained grounded despite his achievements.
The sudden loss of a hardworking and respected administrator has left a deep void. Karnataka has lost a dedicated officer who rose from great struggle to serve the state with honesty, compassion, and responsibility.
