One of the three terror plot accused arrested by the Gujarat ATS in the recent Ricin terror conspiracy case was assaulted inside Sabarmati Central Jail of Ahmedabad. The incident took place early on Tuesday morning (18th November), within hours of the trio being sent to the prison. Following the incident, the Ranip Police Station registered an FIR against three inmates.
According to officials, the terror suspects were handed over to jail authorities on Monday evening (17th November) following the end of their ATS custody. All three have been kept together in one barrack. Later that night, when they were being settled in, one of the accused, identified as Dr Ahmed Mohiyuddin Saiyed suffered injuries to his eye and nose following which other accused started pushing him around. He was taken to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for treatment and brought back to the jail by evening.
How the attack happened
The incident unfolded on Tuesday morning (18th November). The three terror suspects were asleep in their respective rooms inside the barracks when three other inmates walked in, looked at them, and quietly left. Around ten minutes later, the same inmates returned and started arguing with the terror accused. The situation escalated quickly, and the group beat up Mohiyuddin, causing injuries to his face, including his eye and nose.
When one of the other terror suspects, Sayed, began shouting for help, the attackers fled. Jail staff soon reached the spot and took Mohiuddin to the hospital.
Based on Sayed’s complaint, police filed an FIR against the accused prisoners, Anil Kumar, Shivam Sharma and Ankit Lodhi. According to officials, two of the three are undertrial prisoners in a murder case, while the third is lodged in jail under a POCSO case.
According to a report by The Times of India, a jail official claimed that the three inmates assaulted the terror suspects “out of patriotism” and that there was no other motive behind the attack. Police officials say a detailed investigation into the incident is currently underway.
