Two students were arrested Sunday for allegedly stealing gold ornaments and cash from a neighbour’s house near Bengaluru. The police have seized 60 grams of gold from the accused.
The accused have been identified as Abhishek and Chethan, both 21. Abhishek is an MBA student, while Chethan is pursuing aerospace engineering at a private college.
On September 2, the victim, R Shanthamma, had filed a complaint that a gold chain and Rs 85,000 cash were missing from her residence. According to her complaint, Shanthamma could not find the key to her almirah. Later, she took the assistance of key makers to make a duplicate key and discovered that the ornaments and the cash were missing. Thereafter, she filed a complaint with the Chikkaballapur town police.
“It was clear that someone known to the family had stolen the gold ornaments. We tried to find fingerprints, but we did not get any leads. We questioned family members and neighbours as well. Chethan is a neighbour of Shanthamma, and he often visited her,” the officer said.
The police said they kept a watch on the suspects and found that Chethan was spending more money than usual.
“He did three to four trips with Abhishek. They also used to party a lot and paid money in cash. One of our informants also confirmed that Chethan tried to sell the gold ornaments,” the officer further said.
Upon interrogation, Chethan confessed to the crime and said he, along with Abhishek, had hatched the plan to decamp with the cash and gold during Ganeshotsav at the end of August.
