The girl had been sleeping beside her grandmother under a mosquito net inside a railway shed when someone cut the net and took her away. Her grandmother realised around 4 am that the child was missing. “She was sleeping with me. Around 4 am, someone took her away. I didn’t even realise when she was taken. They cut the mosquito net and took her away,” the heartbroken grandmother said.
After hours of searching, the little girl was found the next afternoon, on 8th November, lying naked and bleeding near a drain close to the Tarakeswar railway station. She was found in a pool of blood with bite marks on her cheek. Locals rushed her to the hospital at Tarakeswar, where doctors said she remains in a serious condition and continues to bleed from her injuries.
Her grandmother describes their helpless situation of living, “We live on the streets because they have demolished our houses. Where do we go? We don’t have any homes,” she said.
The police have registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Opposition leaders have accused the police of delaying action and trying to suppress the crime. They claimed the family had gone to the police station soon after the child went missing, but the officials hesitated to file the FIR.
Arambagh district BJP secretary Parna Adak said the child’s condition shows how unsafe women and children are under the current government. She said the police’s slow response added to the tragedy. “The child was asleep beside her grandmother under a mosquito net when the attacker cut through it and took her away. She was later found bleeding near a drain. Despite hours of treatment, she is still in a critical condition,” Adak said.
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari strongly criticised the state government, accusing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of covering up crimes to protect her government’s image. In a post on X, Adhikari wrote that under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, law and order in West Bengal has completely broken down.

He said police officers were acting like loyal servants of the government instead of serving the people. “A child’s life is shattered, yet the police are busy hiding the truth to protect the state’s fake law and order image. How many more innocent girls will suffer like this?” he wrote.
The accused is yet to be identified. Police said they are examining CCTV footage and questioning locals to trace the culprit. The child continues to receive treatment at the hospital, and her condition remains extremely serious.
