After the horrific Kurnool bus fire that claimed 20 lives, the Karnataka Transport Department has imposed a strict ban on carrying bulk mobile phones in private buses. Investigations revealed that over 100 mobile phones being transported for commercial sale exploded as the fire spread, worsening the tragedy.

Under the new guidelines, no private bus will be allowed to transport bulk electronic goods, especially mobile phones. Only passenger belongings weighing up to 30 kilograms will be permitted on board. Commercial goods transport in passenger buses is completely banned.
Every private bus cabin must now be equipped with fire alert buttons, flame-retardant curtains, and proper emergency exits. Before starting each trip, buses will undergo mandatory safety checks at the first stop. Additional check posts will monitor compliance through regular inspections.

The department has also directed that Fitness Certificate (FC) renewals include mandatory safety verification. Even minor safety violations will result in FC denial. Repeated rule breaches will lead to hefty fines and eventual permit cancellation.
Furthermore, bus manufacturers and body builders will come under strict supervision to ensure compliance with design and fire safety norms.
Commissioner Omkareshwari stated, “Passenger safety is our top priority. No compromise will be tolerated. Each RTO officer must ensure 100% adherence to fire and transport regulations.”
