The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has been awarded the “Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) – UltraTech Award” for its groundbreaking design and execution of Thin White Topping (TWT) works in Koramangala, Bengaluru. The project focused on 1st Cross Empire Road and 7th Cross Road, marking a significant step forward in urban infrastructure development.

In 2023, the BBMP implemented a 125 mm-thick white topping across two key stretches: a 1.1 km section from 1st Cross Empire Road to Ganapathi Temple, and a 1.17 km stretch from Koramangala 7th Cross BDA Complex to Wipro Park Signal, both integral parts of the Inner Ring Road (IRR). Traditionally, white-topped roads in the city were designed with a thickness of 180 mm. However, GBA’s engineering team pioneered a thinner, more efficient 125 mm design, offering both technical soundness and cost savings.
TWT optimizes project costs without compromising quality
This innovative approach addresses critical urban challenges, including road elevation, better access to shops and residences, and improved stormwater drainage. The design also optimizes project costs without compromising quality.
Tushar Girinath, Additional Chief Secretary of the Urban Development Department, and Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner, lauded the efforts of the GBA team behind the TWT project, recognizing their commitment to innovation and sustainable urban solutions. Key contributors to the project included M Lokesh (Lead Architect), Hemalatha K, Satyanarayana Raju E, and Veena C.
