World Car Free Day is observed globally on September 22. On this day, communities across several countries encourage alternatives to private car use, promoting walking, cycling, and public transport as healthier and more environmentally responsible choices.
Bengaluru has over 25 lakh registered cars
“Bengaluru has over 25 lakh registered cars, and the growing dependence on them is adding to traffic bottlenecks, air pollution, and noise levels. If citizens collectively embrace public transport, cycling, walking, autos, or shared mobility options even for a single day, the city can witness tangible improvements,” Reddy said.
The police department has requested citizens to plan their commute using buses, metro services, auto-rickshaws, cabs, or bicycles on the designated day. Officials believe such participation will not only reduce vehicular congestion but also spread awareness about long-term behavioral changes that can benefit urban living.
Authorities also emphasized that a successful Car Free Day could inspire more frequent car-free initiatives, making the city cleaner, safer, and more livable.
“Your participation matters. Together, we can give Bengaluru a breath of fresh air,” the Joint Commissioner added.
