The Karnataka government has set December 2026 as the deadline for completing the construction of over 1.8 lakh houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). The initiative, executed by the Karnataka Slum Development Board, had slowed down due to financial hurdles faced by beneficiaries in contributing their share towards the project cost.

State’s contribution to housing beneficiaries
To resolve the impasse, the state decided to bear the contribution on behalf of the beneficiaries, following which ₹500 crore was released. As part of this intervention, 36,789 houses have already been allotted in the first phase, while another 40,345 units are being readied for distribution in the upcoming phase. The Housing Department has been directed to ensure that all sanctioned units are completed within the stipulated time.
In addition to the PMAY scheme, the state is also advancing work on another 47,870 houses under the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation. This project too had been delayed for similar reasons, with many families unable to pay their required share. The government has now secured in-principle approval to cover these costs as well, with a Cabinet proposal expected soon.
Officials confirmed that once approvals are in place, the stalled projects will be expedited to provide timely housing to economically weaker families. With these measures, the government aims to accelerate housing delivery and address urban poverty challenges by significantly expanding access to affordable homes across Karnataka.
