The long-awaited Yellow Line may have eased commutes for some, but it has pushed Bengaluru’s Purple Line into crisis mode, with commuters reporting unbearable rush-hour chaos and demanding urgent fixes.
Bengaluru’s metro expansion was meant to ease the city’s gridlock, but for thousands of daily commuters on the Purple Line, the reality feels harsher than ever. Since the Yellow Line opened last weekend, many say rush-hour travel has turned into a daily ordeal.

A viral Reddit post from a frustrated resident captured the mood: Purple Line trains, already jam-packed during office timings, have become so suffocatingly crowded that passengers are often left stranded on platforms, unable to even step inside. With trains running every five minutes at peak hours, the addition of a major interchange at Majestic has pushed the system beyond its limits.
The commuter lamented that it is now routine to skip multiple trains before finding a sliver of standing space. “The Yellow Line has made the entire metro unusable,” another user remarked, echoing the frustration of many who now dread their commute.

But the post didn’t stop at complaints, it offered solutions. Suggestions included cutting train intervals to two or three minutes, restricting access to dangerously packed platforms, and even piloting express services with limited stops. Others called for broader reforms: staggered office timings across IT hubs, flexible work policies, and a dedicated metro app showing real-time crowding patterns.
The debate has quickly grown into a larger conversation on how Bengaluru should balance its rapidly expanding metro system with commuter safety and comfort. For now, what was celebrated as a milestone in easing city travel has exposed the fragility of another line, reminding Bengaluru that infrastructure fixes can often create new bottlenecks.
