The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is under intense public scrutiny after a disturbing series of fatal accidents involving its buses claimed four lives and left a child critically injured in just two weeks.
A string of four deadly accidents involving BMTC buses
The string of BMTC bus accidents began on July 18 in Peenya, when Suma, a young bank employee waiting for her bus, was fatally struck by a BMTC electric bus. Shockingly, the vehicle was allegedly operated by a non-designated staffer instead of the trained driver.
On July 22, near the Silk Institute Metro Station, a woman riding pillion on a two-wheeler lost her life when a BMTC bus rammed into the vehicle.

Another tragedy unfolded on July 29, again in Peenya Second Phase, when a motorcyclist was killed following a collision with a BMTC bus.
The horror continued on July 30 in Chamarajpet, near Uma Theatre, where a bus ran over a child following a crash with a two-wheeler. The child remains in critical condition.
Just a day later, on July 31, an elderly man died in Madiwala after an electric BMTC bus hit a child crossing the road.
Rising concerns point to reckless driving and speeding by BMTC drivers as possible causes. With five serious incidents in rapid succession, Bengaluru residents are demanding accountability and immediate safety reforms from the city’s public transport authority.
