Bengaluru: A cashier at a currency exchange firm in Kammanahalli has alleged that his employer, the latter’s brother, and others kidnapped him and extorted money over suspicions of theft. According to a complaint lodged with Banaswadi police, four men visited the firm’s office around 8pm on July 9, claiming they had been sent by the brother-in-law of the cashier’s employer to collect $8,000. The cashier, 26, informed his employer of the matter and the visitors told him to collect Indian currency from their car.Once he got into the car, they allegedly locked him inside, snatched his phone, and accused him of stealing Rs 5 lakh from their Frazer Town office. They assaulted him and drove him to Shivajinagar, where they forced him to transfer Rs 83,000 through a digital payment app, the complaint said.Later that night, three more people – the employer, his brother, and a relative – joined the group. They allegedly abused and assaulted the cashier further. Some of the accused went to his house and took Rs 50,000 from his mother.The group then took the cashier to a deserted location, stripped him, and assaulted him with cables, sticks, and PVC pipes, the complaint said. They forced him to say on camera that he had taken the money and beat him up again when he refused to do so. Early the next morning, they tried to extort money from his friend, with whom the victim had online transactions, at Frazer Town but failed. They accused him of having transferred the money to this friend.Around 5am, the victim’s brother-in-law intervened, and the group finally released him but kept his phone. The case is under investigation.
